What are the advantages of the IB Diploma Programme for studying abroad?

The IB develops your command of the English language, which comes in handy when studying abroad. The schooling system also requires students to learn to study independently. International universities across the world accept the IB, and you are eligible for a scholarship depending on your grade level. Many universities favour IB Diplomas for several reasons.

How much does it cost?

Felix-Klein-Gymnasium is a state-funded school and does not charge tuition fees. For participation in the IB Diploma Programme students have to pay the examination fees, which are about €540 (+19% VAT). All students at FKG pay a fee of €15 per year for media and digital administration. Further costs occur for excursions and a course trip (approx. €350). How long does the IB Diploma Programme take?

The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year course, namely years 12/13. Under certain conditions a start with year 11 is also possible, giving the two-year course in years 11/12.

Can you study in Germany with the IB Diploma?

Yes, however under certain conditions only. Regarding proficiency in German, you need to study at least German B HL to be admitted to a German university; some universities may still require you to write an additional German exam such as the DSH. What documents do I need to provide for admission?

• Address and further contact information (including guardians' and student's email and phone)
• Copy of ID card
• Copy of residence permit (if applicable)
• Proof of fulfilling the entrance requirements
• The last two report cards (plus an explanation of the grading system)
• List of schooling so far (names of schools and years)
• Guardians' signatures
• Subject choice form

How are you graded in the IB Diploma Programme?

For each of the six subjects you can be awarded a maximum of 7 points, making a total of 42 points available; another 3 extra points can be awarded for your Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge.

What happens if you fail the IB Diploma?

If a minimum of 24 points is not achieved, the student will be given the opportunity to re-sit the exams in the following year. FKG does not offer exams in November, however.

What does a normal school day look like?

Classes begin at 7:50 a.m., each lesson lasts about 90 minutes, and a normal school day ends at around 3:20 p.m. During the day there are plenty of breaks and time to study on your own or visit the library.

How can the school be reached by public transport?

By bus and train. The train station is about 15 minutes away from school on foot.

What is the maximum class size?

25, however many subjects are taught in smaller groups.

How often are report cards given out?

A report card is issued at the end of each semester, therefore twice a year.

Do students wear a uniform or have a dress code?

No. As this is a state-funded school, pupils are not given uniforms nor do they have to comply with any dress code, however school-appropriate clothing is appreciated.

What languages are taught?

English A HL, German A HL/SL, German B HL. If enough students opt for Spanish and/or French, these subjects can also be offered at B level (SL/HL). Students can also enrol in a Language A: Literature school-supported self-taught course (SL). Please contact the coordinator for further information.
